Preservation refers to the safeguarding (protection) of materials in order to maintain their
original state, thus ensuring a longer service life. Materials are preserved in various ways to make
them sustainable. Sustainable building materials lower the maintenance costs of buildings. This
lesson will cover painting, curing, electroplating, powder coating and galvanising as methods of preservation.
