Timber that is used for construction purposes must be graded because individual pieces of sawn timber vary in strength and stiffness. The South African Bureau for Standards (SABS) has compiled specifications to ensure acceptable uniformity in the quality of the timber produced by different mills, and to ensure that timber is suitable for use in the industry.
