The timber of newly felled trees contains too much water in the form of sap and is therefore unsuited for
immediate use. Coniferous wood contains more sap than hardwood. Sapwood, which is closer to the bark, contains more sap than the heartwood that surrounds the pith of the log. Sap in timber has a negative impact on the properties of the timber and should be removed before the timber can be used in the building industry. The process employed to remove most of the sap from timber is called seasoning.
