The Marakele National Park forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Marakele means place of sanctuary, from its Tswana name. It was home to naturalist Eugene Marais. It is a birding haven, including the largest colony of Cape griffon vultures in the world (around 800 breeding pairs). Marakele is home to the big five. Indigenous mammals to be found in this area is the white rhino, giraffe, warthog, lion, hyena, leopard, impala, blue wildebeest and kudu.
