According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993),the term safety is defined as
“free of hazard” and an accident is defined as “an incident arising out of and in the course of an
employee’s employment and resulting in personal injury, illness or the death of the employee”. It is
an unplanned and uncontrolled event that occurs as the result of an unsafe act or unsafe conditions.
Occupational health includes occupational hygiene, medicine and biological monitoring.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) aims to ensure the occupational health of workers
as well as their right to work in an environment that is free of hazards. It is the responsibility of each
employer to enforce the measures stipulated in the Act. He or she is responsible for his/her own safety
as well as the safety of his/her employees or co-workers.
