In unit 8 we ask the question “why study the history of the Holocaust in South Africa?” We look at the differences and similarities between the policies of the Nazis and the Apartheid regime keeping in mind that both histories occur at different times and in different circumstances and being careful not to conflate the two histories. We unpack the term “conflate” and how conflation of histories leads to inaccurate understandings. We ask the reasons for studying different histories by unpacking how this broadens our understanding of our own histories and allows us to analyse situations and understand them from a different perspective.
