Art Spark #13
MAKE: DIGITAL MEDIA
The American artist, Elliott Hundley, was inspired by an ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides. He started by taking photos of people dressed in costume and posing as characters from the drama. These are cut out and combined with other inkjet prints of motifs and images.
Included are separately cut-out letters as in a ransom note spelling out words and phrases. On this solid ground of images, he used more images, tiny ones, projected from the surface on long pins. The final work has the textural complexity of a painting, the depth of relief sculpture and the data overload of our digital age.
Elliott Hundley, “Pentheus”, soundboard, wood, inkjet print on paper, photographs, pins, plastic, metal, glue, magnifying glasses, 2010, 243.8 x 487.7 x 49.5 cm.
