The Maritime Museum houses a replica of the Caravel in which Bartolomeu Dias became the first European navigator to round the cape, and which he sailed into Mossel Bay for the first time on 3 February, 1488. The museum is built around the Post Office Tree, which has been in use as a post office since 1500.
