Mapungubwe National Park
Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site is in Limpopo Province. Mapungubwe Hill was the capital of the first powerful indigenous kingdom in the region. In this kingdom people were separated according to class, with the king and upper classes living on the hill, and the lower classes living in villages on the plains below. Mapungubwe is most famous for the discovery of the Golden Rhino statue, the symbol of power for the King. Archaeologists have uncovered fossilised footprints and skeletal remains of dinosaurs. The Shashe- and Limpopo rivers confluent here. Mapungubwe is home to one of the largest populations of African Elephant in the world. There are also 470 identified bird species. The landscape consists of sandstone formations and Baobab trees.
