About the Western Cape Museum Educator Group

In 2010 a group of museum educators established the Western Cape Museum Educator (WCME) Group out of a need for professional development and networking opportunities. Since then the Group has group met regularly to share experiences with peers, learn about new ideas and discuss common issues related to our field. Administration is done by volunteers from within the group.

Currently, we have over 90 individual members from 40 institutions across the Peninsula. Anyone doing experiential education programmes is welcome to join – environmental educators, science educators, those working at heritage sites etc. Membership is free.

Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre

The Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre works towards creating a more caring and just society in which human rights and diversity are respected and valued.

Through our exhibitions, events and workshops, we endeavour to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Nazi regime and the numerous genocides that happened before and since the Holocaust.

We do this to highlight the consequences of prejudice and racism in all of its forms, and to draw attention to the dangers of indifference, apathy and silence.

We believe that learning about the past supports the building of a human rights culture and reinforces empathy and compassion. Learning about the past, and the moral and ethical issues it raises, is instructive in dealing with contemporary human rights abuses, for example, homophobia, xenophobia, racism and bigotry. We hope that visiting the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre will afford visitors a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. Visit the site here.

Iziko Museums of South Africa

“The Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) is the Mother City’s premier public art museum – housing a vast and engaging collection of historical, modern and contemporary South African, African and international artworks.

Iziko’s Education Departments work closely with schools, communities, and special interest groups to develop quality educational programmes and resources. These enriching and enabling education programmes include art lessons, workshops, teacher enrichment programmes and educational projects – aimed at adding value to classroom practices, special needs activities and educational resources.

Many resources available here are linked to the CAPS curriculum in order to support, extend, and add value to the South African schooling system. We encourage teachers to use these resources in the classroom setting where appropriate. Information on the learning area and grade level are provided for each school resource.
