About Paula Wickham

Paula began her teaching career in 1993 after completing a four-year Higher Diploma in Education at Barkley House Teacher’s Training College. She taught at Monterey in Cape Town as well as at two pre-primary schools in Port Elizabeth, focusing on the 3–6 year age group, before becoming Principal of Fish Hoek Pre-Primary School in 2008.

Her years in education, coupled with a deep passion for Early Childhood Education, have driven her to continuously seek knowledge and work diligently to ensure children develop essential life skills. She is a firm believer in professional development and the importance of upskilling.

As a member of NAPTOSA and through her involvement with the Teacher Union, including participation on the Provincial Standing Committee and the ELRC ECD Task Team, she has gained a comprehensive understanding of the broader education landscape, along with its challenges and needs.

She believes strongly in fostering creativity and building children’s self-esteem to nurture their confidence in decision-making, problem-solving, thinking, and perceptual skills. Recognizing that children are naturally curious, she supports learning through exploration, tactile experiences, and discovery.

She advocates for integrated learning across all developmental levels during the early years, with a focus on building foundational skills and competencies.

Let’s build minds!
Let’s think outside the box!
Let’s grow the nation!
