About Dr. Naseema Shaik

Dr Naseema Shaik is the Head of Department of the Foundation Phase and coordinator of the Diploma Gr R in the Education Faculty at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Dr Shaik has extensive lecturing experience in the Foundation Phase and Gr R. Dr Shaik’s passion is on advancing early childhood education (focusing on the development of children from (birth to 9 years) at the Faculty of Education.

Her conceptualisation of the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education which focuses on preparing pre-service teachers to teach children from birth to 4 will be offered in the Education Faculty in 2025 which is evidence of this passionate drive. Dr Shaik’s research interests are in children’s participatory rights and participator pedagogies in early childhood education. She has both sole and co-authored publications in local and international journals. She has also co-edited a book titled ‘Voices from the Early Childhood Care and Education Field in South Africa: Research and Promising Practices for New Directions’ and is currently main editor of a book titled ‘Towards developing a transformative pedagogy for early childhood care and education: Possibilities and Priorities for South Africa’ which will be published shortly.

Dr Shaik is also the section editor for the Foundation Phase of the South African Journal of Childhood Education and is an executive member of the South African Research Association for Early Childhood Education (SARAECE). Dr Shaik has served as a keynote and plenary speaker at local and international conferences. She has local and international collaboration on research projects that aims to transform practice, research and policy for early childhood education.
